New to HEMA?

Perfect, we’re glad to have you. There has never been a better time to get into historical fencing. We’re an inclusive group and you don’t need any kind of sports or martial arts background to participate, although if you do have one (Olympic fencing or kendo especially) those skills transfer very easily and you’ll be ahead of the curve.

Your first session

If you have never been to a HEMA club before, please check our calendar for new fencer onboarding sessions, which run on the first Wednesday and second Friday of every month. That should be your first visit.

We'll go over some basics including where to find sources to study, a survey of what is out there to learn, some starting techniques for one and two handed weapons, and get you fighting as quickly as possible.

Wear clothes that are comfortable to move in (whatever that means for you personally), and bring a generous amount of your liquid of choice. We often meet outdoors, especially during the summer.

FAQ

Q: How much does this cost?

A: Nothing, we’re a free study group.

Q: Where do you meet?

A: Check the calendar as we change locations periodically.

Q: Do I need to buy equipment first?

A: No, in fact it’s best if you talk to us first before buying anything.

Q: Do you have loaner equipment?

A: Some, limited. Part of why we keep our meetings free is to help people with limited budget afford their own gear.

Q: I have more questions!

A: Hit us up by email, or join our Discord server. Links at the bottom of the page.
